Twelve

July

I stood outside Oslo S, bouncing on the balls of my feet in nervousness. I had my mobile in one hand and I kept checking the time. I was early, but I'd rather take an earlier train into Oslo central than be late. Being late would not make for a good first impression.

I'd contacted Nikolai the day after I'd arrived in Oslo, like I'd told myself I would. He'd replied and was very kind and optimistic, but he hadn't actually moved down to Oslo yet. Now, two weeks later, I was meeting him for the very first time in person. I had no idea what to expect; I didn't even know what he looked like.

It dawned on me that meeting in front of Oslo S wasn't the best place when you didn't know what that someone looked like. There were a lot of people milling around me, going here and there. Some lounging, some immersed in their phones, others running to reach the trams or the busses.

"Geir?"

I jumped in surprise, then quickly turned around.

"Nikolai?"

I was actually a bit taller than him, which was a shock in itself because I wasn't the tallest person around. However, his outfit outdid any shock about something as trivial as height. He wore a black jumper, which was unzipped, showing off the vest underneath. The vest was loose over the chest with 'My boyfriend's hotter than your boyfriend' in rainbow letters. His jeans were loose-fitting and wine-red, and he wore a rainbow belt around his hips, though I didn't think it really helped keep the jeans up. His Converse were obviously well-worn, but the baby-pink colour couldn't be missed.

"The one and only." He held his arms out to the side, and I could see that they were adorned with bracelets in all kinds of colours. His eyes were green and seemed to sparkle, his hair auburn and shaved short on the sides while it was long on top. He was gay with a capital G. He was also the most out and proud person I'd ever seen. I couldn't remember ever seeing him back home, which was weird, because I would've remembered him if he usually tended to look like this.

"How'd you know it was me?" I asked.

"Tarjei described you to me." Nikolai looked me up and down with a wry tilt of his lips. "Young, blond, cute, innocent. Jørgen's type, apparently, though I didn't even know Jørgen had a type, you know?"

He was like those stereotypical gay men more often than not portrayed on television. He even had the so-called limp wrist. I found I didn't mind one bit. He was out and he was proud, and I liked it. I admired it. He wasn't afraid to show who he was—in fact, he shoved it in people's faces.

"It's nice to meet you," I finally managed, hoping he didn't think I was being rude.

"Right back at you." He moved in to kiss my cheek instead of shaking my hand, like I was used to and had expected.
